The Making of Ronny Rock by Bruce Ingman

From character conception to cake testing - Bruce Ingman shares how he came up with his creative ideas for Ronny Rock...

As soon as I started reading Ronny Rock I got very excited. I knew I wanted to draw the pictures. I knew I was going to have the best of fun doing it. Images kept popping into my head - all those cakes!
What a dream job, especially as I like to do a lot of research. Have you any idea how many cake shops there are in London?

And Ronny and Kieran are brilliant characters. They came to life on the page. Ronny reminded me of a boy on the cover of an LP I had as a teenager by Ian Dury and The Blockheads called New Boots and Panties. Then I mixed in a little bit of my own son, Ted, and there he was.

Kieran - I saw him everywhere. I would follow kids down the road and observe what they where wearing etc. - even knowing how they walked was important. Merryn showed me a photograph of her son Sam and I just slotted all the elements together and Kieran sprang to life.

The art director Ben designed the book and put it all  together. He played with the typography (the shape of the letters) to keep the story racing along. When we needed some big letters in the first book and a door sign, I commissioned  (asked nicely) my daughter Alvie (aged 7) to create some hand drawn type -  see if you can spot it.  In the spirit of Ronny Rock she was rewarded with a monster cake!
