The Infernal Devices 1: Clockwork Angel

By Cassandra Clare

A prequel to the bestselling Mortal Instruments series.

Magic is dangerous - but love is more dangerous still... When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray arrives in England during the reign of Queen Victoria, something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Friendless and hunted, Tessa seeks refuge with the Shadowhunters, a band of warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons. Drawn ever deeper into their world, she finds herself fascinated by - and torn between - two best friends, and quickly realizes that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

Reviews

'To say I loved this book would be selling this story short. Having been an uber fan girl of Cassie's work since reading the first Mortal Instruments book City of Bones in 2007, there is nothing this woman has written that I wouldn't fight to read...Characters that are complex and diverse, a story line that is original and engaging. Clockwork Angel was mesmorising and started the series with a bang. Love love love love this book a LOT. p.s For the record, i'm Team Cassie.' The Crooked Shelf

'Clockwork Angel is a spectacular example of YA urban fantasy. Cassandra Clare really is a genius... I loved Clockwork Angel and after devouring it in hours, I'm already anxiously awaiting more of Cassandra Clare's writing.' So Many Books, So Little Time

'My expectations for Clockwork Angel could not have been higher. Cassandra Clare is one of my favourite authors ever! So I am pleased to say that returning to the world of the Shadowhunters was everything I hoped it would be and more...It felt like a true novel of the city and not a sort of imposed reality which just illustrates further Cassandra Clare's ability as a writer to make you a part of the story. Overall, this is a superb story that has it all! Oh and it is probably worth adding that I am Team Will...' The Bookette

'All in all, Clockwork Angel is a great start to a new series. The steampunk aspect works well and the villain of the piece is suitable menacing, although yet to be fully fleshed out - I look forward to seeing a lot more of him in later books. I see no reason why fans of Jace, Clary and the gang from the Mortal Instruments would not take Tessa, Will and Jem to their hearts. I have, and I look forward to the next installment with great curiosity and glee. Clockwork Angel is, thank goodness, a triumph and one that stands alone perfectly well.' Mountains of Instead

'All in all an excellent book which I encourage you to read even if you haven't read mortal instruments. Although the book is a prequel apart from brief references nothing crosses over yet - I am hoping they might in the future. I literally cannot wait for the next one!!' The Overflowing Library

'This book will be a big bonus to all of Clare's fans who enjoyed her Mortal Instruments series... It's a lengthy book which should keep teenage dark romance fans well occupied!' Bury Free Press Series

'It's got everything; set in Victorian London but with a usefully American heroine - feisty and attractive, natch; it features the Nephilim, a category of quasi-angelic beings and some interesting vampires...a cracking read.' Evening Standard
