Have you heard of the New York Times bestselling series Hank Zipzer for junior readers yet? The series is by Henry Winkler, aka “The Fonz” and co-author Lin Oliver. It launched in the UK last year in support of the National Year of Reading during which Henry spoke out about his own reading challenges as a sufferer of dyslexia.
Hank Zipzer is a ten-year-old boy, with dyslexia, based on Henry’s own experiences. He says: ‘School was unbelievably hard for me. Teachers didn’t know what dyslexia was at that time. So I was labelled a troublemaker. I was the class clown. I got a bad grade in everything but lunch. I was great at lunch! Just because we learn differently that does not mean that we are not incredibly smart human beings. That’s something I need every child to understand.’
