Tuesday 12th November saw the first annual Michael Rosen Day, a national celebration aimed at families, schools, nurseries, libraries and the book trade, celebrating 50 years since poet, author and national treasure Michael’s first book.
Ahead of the day, Michael Rosen launched a manifesto for reading, and more generally celebrating creativity, poetry and reading for pleasure. Michael says of the day: ‘I hope this day can be a day when we can celebrate any way in which we can put books into children’s hands!’
Run in partnership with literacy charity Read for Good, A free to attend virtual event was hosted in the morning by multi-award-winning teacher turned rapper and viral social media sensation, Jacob Mitchell, aka MC Grammar. The event was a huge success, broadcast to over 80,000 viewers. Schools, libraries and bookshops across the country ran events and created book displays using free resources created for the day and accessible via the Michael Rosen Day website.
