Role: Key Account Manager

Reports to: Head of UK Sales

Introduction to this role

The purpose of this role is to assist the company in meeting sales targets by managing and selling to UK key accounts (which include large supermarket and high street brands).

Key Duties include but are not limited to;

  • To visit Key Account customers at head office on a regular basis to manage their accounts and grow sales. This would include presenting new titles, taking backlist orders, negotiating terms, creating bespoke promotions, business review meetings, maintaining spend grids and reviewing core stock amounts.
  • To represent key accounts in-house. This would include developing and maintaining the understanding of the commercial market, proactively working with marketing and PR on third party tie-ins or taggin opportunities, monitoring performance of budgets, submitting sales reports etc. 
  • To be responsible for own budget by planning expenditure and monitoring spend against target. 
  • To be responsible for maintaining own awareness of product range in order to sell effectively. This would include attending sales conference, reading advance information materials and researching outside of the company.

Skills and Experience Preferred  

  • Achievement of sales targets
  • Ability to grow key account revenue whilst protecting discount and margin drift
  • Ability to produce and deliver incremental sales using creative thought and initiative bespoke to account base
  • Effective positioning/relationship with key client decision-makers
  • Experience at UK publisher selling to a range of commercial accounts, either at executive or manager level
  • Understanding of publishing process, market and product knowledge
  • Business acumen, ability to assess the worth of deals

Role: Senior Designer (Maternity Cover)

Reports to: Senior Art Director

Introduction to this role

To ensure that the highest quality design work is project managed and carried out within the agreed brief, within budget and on schedule. This role will have a primary focus on full colour illustrated book design, reporting to the Deputy Creative Director

Key Duties include but are not limited to;

  • Project manage assigned titles by producing and confirming final specification, costs and schedule with Production and other departments and monitor progress/report any divergence where necessary
  • Evaluate costs, technical constraints and market requirements balance cost/quality/time
  • Work closely with the illustrator and respond with feedback on work supplied, monitor and report on progress
  • Check proofs and ozalids accurately and efficiently 
  • Prepare projects correctly for print and reprographic requirements following company systems of working.

Skills and Experience Preferred  

  • Good reprographic knowledge is essential
  • Indesign and Photoshop expertise a necessity (and a good working knowledge of Illustrator also valuable).
  • Proven experience in book design across all areas
  • A passion and enthusiasm for Children’s books
  • Desirable experience designing novelty books

Role: Senior Editor (Maternity Cover)

Introduction to this role

The Senior Editor’s overall responsibility will be to help the Publisher to develop and grow the list and move it in new directions. We are looking for someone who is passionately committed to children's books and possesses creative flair to push boundaries. 

 

Key Duties include but are not limited to;

  • Building, fostering and maintaining close working relationships with existing and new authors & illustrators.
  • Generating new and interesting book publishing ideas.
  • Scouting for new writing talent.
  • Encouraging writers and illustrators to create high-profile, best-selling stories.
  • Working closely and effectively with designers and editor colleagues within Walker Books UK, Candlewick Press and Walker Books Australia.
  • Researching and commissioning appropriate authors and author/illustrators.

Skills and Experience Preferred  

  • Solid editorial experience within children’s publishing.
  • Thorough understanding and appreciation of children’s book market place and needs.
  • Ability to assist with title management, contribute to the development of marketing plans, liaise closely with the sales and marketing teams.
  • Ability to help with publishing programme planning, negotiating and preparing contracts and budget management.
  • Able to demonstrate initiative and the ability to apply sound commercial awareness and judgement.

Role: London Sales Rep

Introduction to this role

The London Sales rep must meet sales targets by selling/representation of company products. We are looking for someone who is able to represent Walker and third party clients in a professional manner at all times. 

 

Key Duties include but are not limited to;

  • To visit key account chains, independent bookshops, museums and galleries on a regular basis to grow sales and develop partnerships
  • To be responsible for all slaes-related activity within own territory
  • To provide information to support the UK sales decision making process at acquisitions
  • To be responsible for maintaining own awareness of product range in order to sell effectively
  • To be responsible for liasing with TBS and Sales Admin to ensure client/product information is up to date and all orders are supplied on time and in full

 

Skills and Experience Preferred  

  • Commercially and financially literate
  • Strong IT skills, including in particular good knowledge of Excel
  • Sales experience and passion for children's books and bookselling
  • Ability to manage a diverse account base
  • Accuracy, relevance and timeliness of sales reports
  • Maintaining good relationships with all customers and acting at all times in a professional manner
