Role: Senior Commissioning Editor

Reports to: Executive Editorial Director

 

Introduction to this role

To commission and create new projects and manage backlist in collaboration with the Executive Editorial Director to ensure own area of publishing list meets identified market needs and sales growth. To create a list of titles that fits the strategic direction and plan for the company. 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Developing and maintaining own market awareness in order to identify market opportunities, including attendance at trade fairs, conferences, creative writing courses and other relevant events and using these to promote list externally. 
  • Identifying publishing opportunities and developing and proposing acquisitions and projects to enhance list. 
  • Supporting the development of a coherent fiction publishing programme within the commercial market context. 
  • Taking responsibility for all commercial aspects of own projects, e.g. costings, contract negotiation, budgets, schedules.
  • Developing and establishing new author/agent relationships.
  • Managing all aspects of own titles through the publishing process, ensuring quality and timliness of editorial and design work.
  • Representing and promoting own titles internally, communicating their marketability to Sales and Marketing, including presentations at sales conferences. 
  • Liaising with colleagues in other departments such as Sales,Marketing, Production and Business Affairs to ensure smooth process of titles at all stages. 
  • Training and management of junior editorial staff as required, to include development, performance reviews and appraisals, assessing and managing workloads. 
  • To help Editors and Design Team develop market awareness and commercial judgement, coach them in contract negotiations, and in the development and shaping of sound proposals.

 

Key Performance Indicators:

  • List and title revenue and profitability, delivering on time and to budget.
  • Scope and depth of external network.
  • Effectiveness of internal relationships.
  • Considerable engagement with and awareness of opportunities in relevant social media.
  • Effectiveness of people management as required. 

 

Skills and Experience:

  • Graduate
  • Several ywars experience working as a senior editor within children's publishing, including programme planning, negotiating and preparing contract and budget management.
  • A thorough understanding of the children's book market and the ability to apply sound commercial awareness and judgement.
  • Management capability and ability to demonstrate initiative. 

 

Dimensions:

  •  Full commissioning role responsible for individual titles or restricted part of list.

Role: IT Support Analyst

Reports to: Senior Support Manager 

 

Introduction to this role

If you’re technically minded, have experience with both Mac and Windows systems at the desktop level, have great customer service skills and have a passion for problem solving, then you may be perfect for our Mac/PC Support Analyst role!

The Walker Books group has locations across the world. The combination of our relatively small size (130 local, UK based users), and our global footprint, allows the opportunity to work with a large number of enterprise level systems and applications across the group - at a manageable scale.

Although delivering and supporting high performing, stable systems is your main goal, providing a friendly and professional level of service to your users is just as important. Key Responsibilities

    Deploy, support and maintain our Mac/Windows desktops (experience and knowledge of DNS, DHCP, Group Policy and NTFS Permissions are essential).

    Provide cross-platform (Mac/PC) first and second level support to users, manage help desk tickets and escalate where necessary. Great communication and people skills are a must.

    Manage Active Directory users, mailboxes and the on-boarding/off-boarding process.

  • Maintain and deploy endpoint protection systems (anti-virus, anti-spam, patching, backups etc.).

    Manage communications systems (VOIP phone system, video conferencing/Zoom, IM).

  • Deploy and support corporate and BYOD mobile devices via MDM.

    Support and maintain company printers, consumables etc. 

    Maintain accurate asset and software licensing tracking.

    Provide user training where appropriate, including new user IT Induction.

    Create and maintain user documentation, training guides and internal IT documentation.

  • Assist with new IT projects and undertake other duties as may reasonably be required.

 

Essential Skills:

  • Excellent people skills with a focus on customer service

    Cross-platform desktop skills (Mac and Windows)

    Great communications skills, attention to detail and ability to multi-task

    Active Directory User and Exchange Mailbox Administration experience

    Experience building, configuring and the centralized deployment of Mac/Windows systems

    Supporting Microsoft Office suites

    Backup system administration (Veeam and Symantec products)

    iOS/Android mobile device support and administration (MDM Experience a plus)

    Antivirus (Kaspersky) administration & deployment

    An understanding of basic networking concepts, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP etc.

    Printer support, troubleshooting and administration

     

    Desirable Skills:

    Windows Server (2008/2012/2016)

    Virtualization platforms (VMware) and storage systems (SAN, NFS, NAS)

    Experience with Microsoft 365/Office 365

    Experience supporting Adobe Creative Cloud Apps (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)

    Airwatch MDM or Microsoft Intune Experience

    VoIP Telephone systems (Mitel/3CX)

    Scripting and automation                                                                            

     

    Experience in the Publishing industry

Role: Assistant Art Director

Reports to: Executive Art Director

 

Introduction to this role

To ensure the highest quality design work is produced within agreed briefs, budgets and schedules. To manage the workload of the Fiction Designer. To manage the outsourcing of freelance design projects. 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Organising and processing own design projects, including: seeking in-house approval at agreed stages, checking proofs, managing costs, maintaining design and production schedules
  • Overseeing the Fiction Designer's work so as to maintain quality and keep to schedules/benefits
  • Supervising the Fiction Designer, including job development and motivation and reporting back to the Executive Art Director on progress. This includes the annual appraisal for the Fiction Designer
  • Being responsible for briefing and supervising freelance design, ensuring work is monitored and approved to fit the demands of each cover brief. Ensuring that freelancers keep to schedule, budget and quality
  • Managing the available additional time of the Typesetter/Designer role (that is the time remaining after the reprint workload has been completed - approximately 60% of the job) and reporting to the Publishing Manager on their workload
  • Working with the Executive Art Director to: monitor the overall Fiction Design workload across the company, monitor the Fiction schedule and manage the timely provision of all Fiction covers and other sales material as needed for key dates, advise on the costs of projects and engage with the overall look and design of all Fiction titles across the company
  • Presenting Fiction titles at the cover meeting and at the Cover Briefing Meeting, and feeding back to designers and editors with the Executive Art Director. Chasing and discussing briefs with editors and feeding back to the design team
  • Running a weekly Fiction Design meeting in order to engage with fiction design work actoss the company, inviting design staff as appropriate for ongoing projects, discussing briefs and cover meeting feedback
  • Working with the Marketing Design Team in order to ensure cover designs (and design assets) translate successfully into marketing and PR contexts
  • Delivering and managing materials for presentations and pitches, when appropriate and within the constraints of time and workload.

 

Key Performance Indicators:

  • Own designs, and managed staff and freelancers' designs, all meet brief
  • Own designs, and managed staff and freelancers' designes produced on time and within budget
  • Quality and consistency of design work
  • Appropriate use of freelancers
